Finding My Rhythm: Balancing Classes, Basketball, and Camera Work
What’s up! This is the third blog in the series! I’m on spring break at the moment, but I’ve been up to various things at NC State over the past few weeks.
Let’s start with classes. Currently, I’m getting all of my General Education classes out of the way as well as my low-level Communication classes (I am a COM major). My courses are as follows:
– Public Speaking (COM 110)
– Interpersonal Communication (COM 112)
– Psychology (PSY 200)
– Finite Math (MA 114)
– English (ENG 101)
In my Public Speaking class, I had to give a speech right before break. I killed it! The prompt informed us that our speech had to be 4-6 minutes long, and it had to be informative. This left the playing field pretty wide open, so I spoke on how to make a video. As this is a topic I’m well informed on, I spoke easily and filled the full 6 minutes with valuable content.
Moving on to activities that I participate in every week! I’m on an intramural basketball team with a bunch of my buddies. We’re currently sitting at a 2-2 record going into the playoffs next week. While this isn’t great, I know we have the potential to make it far in the playoffs if we lock in. The last game was a nailbiter until the end, when a kid on the other team drained six threes in three minutes. Not a good way to end the game.
My internship with the football team is also going very well. I shot a real practice for the first time. I enjoyed it a lot, but I also learned a few things about shooting:
First, there is no such thing as overshooting, only undershooting. My director told me he’s working on an hour-long documentary for ACC Network, so he needs every good shot he can get.
Second, shooting manual video requires a huge learning curve. We’re required to shoot manual with video, which means we have to adjust the focus throughout the play. If a player happens to run at my lens, I have to adjust the focal length and the focus at the same time to keep him in focus. It sounds hard because it is hard. I need more practice, but I’m confident I’ll get better.

Music Corner: “I KNOW.” by DC3 is a song I have had on repeat this week. DC3 is a smaller, young artist who has catchy flows and is very melodic. Go check him out.
