Is College Worth It? A Freshman’s Perspective

Okay, so here’s the thing about college – it’s not for everyone, but as someone living it right now, it’s been a game-changer for me.

What’s up! My name is Silas, and this blog post is the first of (hopefully many) about my college experience. I am a freshman at NC State, and it has been an awesome start so far. One of the best parts is that I landed a creative internship with the Wolfpack media team, where I get to shoot and edit videos for our football team’s social media. We’re talking 300-400k followers across platforms, which is the most exposure my content has ever gotten.

Here’s the thing – I got super lucky because I knew what I wanted to do before I got here. A lot of Freshmen go into college without knowing what they want to do (which is totally fine, exploratory studies is a great opportunity to figure out more), but knowing my passion early helped me get my foot in the door way faster.

Everyone will be getting internships in their sophomore and junior years, but if you snag one as a freshman or the summer after your freshman year, it will be so much of a head start on others. I’m going to be working with the football team all four years of college, which is already helping me get passes to shoot other sports, too. This also helped me to capture an internship with a big production company over the summer named TA Films, which would be insane for leveling up my skills in media.

So, back to the whole “is college worth it” question – for me, it’s a no-brainer. The career stuff has been great, but I’ve met some of the most genuine people I’ve ever met in my life. The connections at college are just different.

I’ll get more into the details about classes and what college is actually like in my future posts. I want to keep it real and share everything – the good, the bad, and the straight-up weird moments of college life.

Music Corner: This week I’ve been vibing to “Sacrifice” by Dreamville, featuring EARTHGANG, J.Cole, Smino, and Saba. The track’s flow is impeccable throughout, but J. Cole’s closing verse particularly stands out as one of his finest.
